Breast Augmentation

Every day, hundreds of women seek breast augmentation surgery to enhance the shape and size of their breasts. Those who experience the best results from this procedure have naturally small breasts, deflated breasts due to pregnancy or weight loss, or asymmetrical breasts. With many years of experience as a board-certified plastic surgeon in Kansas City, Dr. Colyer continues to establish a renewed sense of confidence as well as a larger, more youthful breast contour for his breast augmentation patients.

The Consultation

During your initial consultation with Dr. Colyer, you will be informed of all of your options. Dr. Colyer will ensure that you understand the entire process and answer all your questions. Before any decisions are made, Dr. Colyer will assess your desires, health history, and breast anatomy so that together you can decide the surgical plan that will yield the best results.

About the Procedure

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia, and typically takes about one and a half to two hours to perform.

Breast Augmentation Options

Incision Locations

  • Periareolar (around the areola)
  • Inframammary (beneath the breast at the crease)
  • Transaxillary (in the armpit)

Implant Placement

  • Subglandular (above the pectoral muscle)
  • Submuscular (below the pectoral muscle)

Implant Type

  • Saline - FDA approved for women 18 years or older
  • Silicone - FDA approved for women 22 years or older

Implant Shape

  • Round
  • Anatomical (tear drop)

Dr. Colyer most frequently performs breast augmentation using an incision around the areola and implant placement beneath the muscle. However, the transaxillary (armpit) incision, inframammary incision, or placement beneath the breast tissue may be better options for some patients. The patient can also choose between saline implants or silicone-gel filled implants that come in either a round or anatomical shape. Since breast augmentation is a highly individualized procedure, Dr. Colyer will walk you through each option along with the results they provide during your consultation.

Recovery

After surgery, you should have someone drive you home and assist you for the first 24 to 48 hours. You will not be able to lift heavy objects or bend over, and you may find that opening doors and other seemingly easy tasks will be more difficult to perform. You will likely be advised to sleep with several pillows or to rest propped up in a reclining chair to keep you more comfortable. A compression garment and ice packs can reduce swelling and discomfort. Most patients are able to return to work within one to two weeks after the procedure, although they should avoid any strenuous activities or heavy lifting for two months. Dr. Colyer will schedule several follow-up appointments to ensure you are healing properly and that all your needs are met.

Results

The results of larger, more shapely breasts will be apparent immediately after surgery and will continue to improve over the next several months as swelling dissipates. Women are usually very happy with their increased breast size and have a boost in their confidence and self-esteem.

Women who choose Dr. Colyer for their breast augmentation procedure can anticipate highly specialized personal service in a private, relaxed setting. If you are interested in this procedure, please schedule your consultation today by calling (913) 338-5600 or visit our contact page.
