If you know of a child suffering from Apert Syndrome and you are looking for a medical leader in plastic surgery, Kansas City's Jeffrey Colyer, M.D. at Plastic Surgical Arts could be the perfect surgeon for you.
Dr. Colyer is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and is considered a specialist in the field of craniofacial - pertaining to the face and skull - surgery. As such, not only is he adept in performing facelift in Kansas City, but our Kansas plastic surgery specialist could be the best choice to help your child afflicted with the debilitating defect Apert Syndrome.
What are the symptoms of Apert Syndrome?
The condition is primarily characterized by:
Specific malformations of the skull, mid-face, hands, and feet
Prematurely fused skull
A "shrunken" mid-face
Prominent or bulging eyes with eyelids that tilt downward
Intellectual development may be hindered
Can Apert Syndrome be treated?
Unfortunately, as Apert Syndrome is genetic, there is no known cure, but there is much that can be done to prevent or treat complications; allowing a child to grow as normally as possible.
Dr. Colyer can perform certain surgeries in order to reposition the facial bones from mid-eye to upper jaw, or even spacing the bones in just such a way that new bone growth is encouraged over time.
Sometimes a fusion of the fingers and/or toes can occur with Apert Syndrome. However surgery is only necessary when function is impaired, and in the case of toes, if the ability to walk might be at stake.
